Marina Insurance

In Queensland, boat insurance is not legally mandatory unless your recreational ship is over 15 meters in length. However, comprehensive coverage is highly recommended. Because there is no Compulsory Third Party (CTP) scheme for detached boats, you are personally liable for any property damage or injuries caused if you crash into a jetty, marina, or another vessel.

Bundaberg Port Marina does require you to be insured.

Vessel Insurance & Tropical Cyclone Preparation

Tropical Cyclone season in Australia runs from November to April. While the entire Queensland coastline can be affected by tropical cyclones, Bundaberg is not considered to be at high risk from major cyclones. Generally, the stronger and more destructive systems cross the coast north of Rockhampton. Bundaberg Port Marina to date has not had a named storm cross their coastline for more than 25 years. Weather events however are a product of nature.

Insurance Requirements for Berthing and Storage

All vessels at Bundaberg Port Marina must be covered by valid marine insurance while on our premises. This applies to both floating berths and their hardstand/ship-lift facility. Many owners find that providing clear documentation of the marinas secure storage and cyclone preparation procedures, helps maintain continuous coverage throughout their time in Australia.

Some insurance companies may request that your vessel be located south of 25 degrees latitude at certain times. Bundaberg Port Marina’s Hardstand & Shiplift Facility has provided detailed tie-down and emergency weather procedures to numerous insurers, and the majority have confirmed that their preparation is sufficient for vessels to remain covered while in dry storage.

How Vessels Are Secured on the Hardstand

Every vessel stored on the hardstand is professionally secured as follows:

  • Lifted out and placed into a sturdy cradle
  • Secured with 4 x 2.5 tonne ratchet straps
  • All cradles are securely pinned to the ground using 900mm long axles
  • Tie-downs remain in place on the vessel until the owner returns

This robust process has been reviewed and approved by many insurance providers.

You are welcome to forward this information directly to your insurance company for their approval to ensure continuous coverage while your vessel remains stored at the marina precinct.
