Unforgettable Wildlife Experience

Nestled along the pristine shores of Mon Repos Conservation Park, just 14km east of Bundaberg, the Mon Repos Turtle Centre and its renowned nightly Turtle Encounters offer one of Australia’s most magical and meaningful wildlife experiences. As a key nesting site for endangered loggerhead turtles (and occasional visits from green, hawksbill, and flatback turtles), Mon Repos provides a rare opportunity to witness these ancient mariners in their natural habitat under the guidance of expert Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) Rangers.

Why Mon Repos is Special

Mon Repos is one of the most significant mainland turtle rookeries in eastern Australia. Every year, from November to March, female turtles haul themselves ashore to lay their eggs in the soft sand. Weeks later, the tiny hatchlings emerge and make their perilous journey to the ocean. The site plays a vital role in conservation and research, helping protect these vulnerable species, with only about 1 in 1,000 hatchlings reaching adulthood.

The Mon Repos Turtle Centre serves as the hub for education and interpretation. Visitors can explore interactive displays, learn about the turtles’ life cycle, threats they face (such as climate change, pollution, and predation), and the decades of dedicated research and conservation efforts at the site. During turtle season, tour participants gain access to immersive experiences like the Turtle Tales exhibit.

The Nightly Turtle Encounter Tours

The highlight is the ranger-guided Turtle Encounter tour. These small-group experiences operate seven nights a week during the season (typically early November to late March), with tours running from around 7pm until late, on “turtle time.”

– Nesting Season (November to early February): Watch a female turtle dig her nest and lay dozens of eggs — a powerful, ancient ritual.
– Hatching Season (late January to end March): Witness hatchlings emerge from the sand and scramble toward the ocean, often with rangers helping create safe pathways.

Tours involve walking on soft sand (up to 1–1.6km return) and can last several hours depending on turtle activity. Rangers share fascinating insights while ensuring minimal disturbance to the animals. There are no guarantees of sightings (nature’s schedule!), but the educational value and beach atmosphere make every tour memorable.

Important Notes:

– Bookings are essential and often sell out quickly. Tickets for the 2026–2027 season go on sale from 1 June 2026 via the official QPWS booking site.
– Online bookings close at 4pm daily. Tours run every night except 24, 25, and 31 December.
– Suitable for all ages, but best for those with reasonable mobility. Children under 5 may have restrictions; check details when booking.
– Strict rules protect the turtles: no lights, photography, or touching without ranger direction.

Visiting the Turtle Centre

Beyond the night tours, the centre is open during the day for self-guided exploration (check current hours). It’s an excellent stop for families, school groups, or anyone interested in marine conservation. Combine your visit with a day at nearby Bargara Beach or Kelly’s Beach for a full coastal adventure.
